Northwest Passage Gallery
In August, 2003, I participated in a 100th anniversary crossing of the Northwest Passage with the US Coast Guard. Starting in Thule, Greenland, the Coast Guard Polar Icebreaker Healy wended its way through the Canadian high arctic to Barrow, Alaska. Atlanta-based writer Al Martin and I collaborated on a series of "web dispatches," contrasting a modern transit of the passage with that of Amundsen's historic crossing in 1903. The dispatches were posted on the Healy website while we were in transit. Copies of the dispatches are below (.pdf files). More about Healy here: http://www.uscg.mil/pacarea/cgchealy/default.asp. 20 August 2003 Polar Icebreaker Marks Historic Feat by Norwegian Explorer Amundsen in 1903 See a map of the voyage. |
